Thanksgiving ideas

I love fall and Thanksgiving time...  probably even more than Christmas.  We've never hosted a Thanksgiving at our own home, even though I dream of the day we have enough dining room space to do so with our families.  We usually celebrate either at my parent's or Jeremy's parent's home not far from here.  We love being with family.  I love sitting around long playing games, sipping hot drinks, and enjoying dessert long after the meal is done.

Since I'm not hosting a Thanksgiving meal this year, I'll pass along this idea just in case you are!  How fun would it be to have fun labels like these on your buffet line?

How about printing some Thanksgiving coloring pages for your kiddos?  For some fun and learning at home or to color on Thanksgiving before or after the meal!

We plan on doing a few of these crafts in the next two weeks as well to celebrate the season.

And we'll be bringing these fun little turkeys to the Thanksgiving meal for a treat!

Hope this helps inspire you as you celebrate with thanksgiving in your hearts the season to come.

First Snow Day favorite

Each year, we celebrate the first day of snow with a good, long romp around in it, and then a steaming cup of homemade hot cocoa. Yesterday was no different!   This is the easiest thing to make, you could forever be rid of Swiss Miss!  We drink it all winter once every couple weeks or so...

Hot Cocoa  serves 4-5

In a saucepan, add the following, then heat to boiling for 2 min.
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
dash of salt
1/3 c. hot water

After boiling, add the following, and heat to drinking temp!
4-5 cups of milk
3/4 t. vanilla

I'm telling you, you'll abandon hot chocolate packets forever.  :)

Winter is upon us

Whenever my brain is too full to even choose one topic to blog about, I go random.  And I've heard several times that these are some of your favorite posts... so here goes.
We are sitting on the edge of winter.  It has snowed once or twice, but we've only got an inch or so of snow to show for it.  Then a wind storm this week blew the rest of it away, except for a small mound the kids assembled in an attempt to get started on the year's first snow fort.

I love this time of year.
I love spicy and pumpkin-y candles, scarves, boots, and mittens.  I've been freezing cold this year, even in my own house heated to 70 degrees - so I've been bundling up in slippers and sweatshirts to stay cozy.  I'd have to say, I even love that.

We are also one of those families that starts listening to Christmas music in October when the weather turns frigid and winter-like.  It encourages me,  it encourages us.  We aren't trying to rush away the time from now and Christmas, we are trying to savor it.  I have several Christmas CD's I love, but Pandora has been a great source of different kinds of Christmas music...  my current favorite stations on Pandora are:

MercyMe Holiday
Vince Guaraldi Trio Holiday (A Charlie Brown Christmas)
Frank Sinatra Holiday
Classical Christmas Radio
Away in a Manger Radio
Josh Groban Holiday

I think it'd be different if we lived in a warm and sunny locale this time of year, but we don't... so bring on the best of winter right now.  The current jar candle I'm burning is Pumpkin Cheesecake scented, and it was buy one get one free - score!

We're also looking forward to enjoying our favorite Charlie Brown specials that we own on DVD.

On the adoption front, things are moving forward!  We had our adoption homestudy completed last Monday.... now we just wait for that to be written and delivered to our attorney so he can solidify a court date for us.  The sooner the better!  On Christmas Day, he will have been here with us for 6 months.  That is the minimum he has to live in our home before the courts will finalize his adoption.
Levi will be 14 months old tomorrow, and he's been in our home just over 4 months now.  He is just precious and is learning so much, here's what he's up to lately:

walking  (walking really quickly to get away from a tickle monster)
signing "please", "all done", and "more" to communicate with us and learn good manners
pushing around his toy cars and trucks
sleeping like a champ!  13 hours at night, 3-4 hour nap
he and Gabi are best buds, and get along amazingly
jabbering more in his sweet, high-pitched voice
says ba-ba (bottle), uh-oh, and mama

I wish I had a new picture to show, but our camera is acting funky... we took a CUTE video last weekend of Gabi kissing him on the face and him cracking up over and over again!  Some new baby pictures coming soon!

School is in full-swing, we've hit our stride again after the interruption of my last-minute trip out of state 2 weeks ago.  We've had some good school days and are learning Godly-character traits, this week we're on Courageous.  And we've started learning a new hymn for the month of November:  Fanny's Crosby's He Hideth my Soul.  We've found that searching YouTube for our favorite version with words on the screen works best, and we all enjoy it.  Then we find other versions to keep things interesting.

We're also studying sea voyage, ships, and ocean science using some great resources from Winter Promise.  And studying ancient history using The Story of the World, Vol. 1 CD's read by Jim Weiss.  (Jim Weiss is our favorite, so we fit him in whenever we can!)  We're also listening to the classic,  Carry On, Mr. Bowditch on CD, also read by Jim Weiss.  We just never tire of hearing his voice.  (and all of the fun voices he does!)

We're on the last two chapters of Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder... which we all love.  It was my favorite Little House book growing up.

There is lots more school related, but we're starting school ourselves in an hour, so I'd better get to scooting!  Babies need to get up, be fed and dressed, and I need to get myself together as well.

I'll share on more bit of randomness before I sign off for now... and it's a good one!!  My cousin Kelley suggested we watch BBC's series Lark Rise to Candleford, after reading that we like BBC miniseries.
We found Season 1 at Blockbuster, and once we finished those four disks over a couple of weeks... we were sunk!  So we thought.  Then I wandered into our public library (which I often do) and found that our little library has Seasons 1-4!!  For free!!!  So we've now barreled through Season 3...  now mind you, we don't watch TV, but Lark Rise to Candleford is our kind of TV.  The whole family loves it.  There was one episode we skipped, and it was the Season 2, 1st Episode Christmas special which was about a ghost and it was really creepy.  Not our thing.  And the show is not usually like that AT ALL.  There have been a few thematic elements that we've had the kids leave the room for, or certain episodes we don't have them watch... but overall it is fun, funny, and heartwarming.

"Flora Thompson's charming love letter to a vanished corner of rural England is brought to life in this heartwarming, critically acclaimed BBC adaptation, now available in a complete series collection.
Set in the late 19th century, this rich, funny and emotional series follows the relationship of two contrasting communities: Lark Rise, a small hamlet gently holding onto the past, and Candleford, a neighboring market town bustling into the future. When young Laura Timmins leaves Lark Rise for a job at the Candleford post office, she discovers an eye-opening, exciting new world.
In the face of scandals and feuds, she must leave her childhood behind and forge her own path to womanhood."

Check it out!  Literally.

Last weekend's trip

Last Thursday night, at the last minute I hopped on a jet plane to fly overnight to Indiana... since I have nearly zero brain power this week, I'll let my sister do the talking on this one... she wrote a beautiful post about our time there with my Dad's siblings and our cousins... it was an emotional trip both hard and happy times... my Dad's oldest sibling, our 76 year old dear Aunt Myrna is ill and has been in the hospital for months - the whole family was back home there for the weekend  including my Dad and sister - it was time to go!  So I went.

My Dad, sister, and I
The family pizza party on my first night there!  5 of my Dad's 9 siblings were there with some of my cousins and second cousins.. We have a BIG family on my Dad's side.
9 aunts and uncles
25 first cousins
36 second cousins

It's an amazing family to be a part of.  I love them so much and can't believe they aren't in my everyday life.
Read my sister's post to read about our trip there!

WonderMaps!!

Recently, we've had the opportunity to review WonderMaps, a really cool product sold by Timberdoodle!
I'm a history and geography buff and this suited my likes as a homeschool teacher just perfectly and the kids thinkt it is super cool too.

The map of Egypt we printed with all of the bells and whistles included.  (aka: labeled bodies of water, towns, physical landmarks, and elevation changes)

WonderMaps came as a digital download, and lets you choose what kind of map you're looking to print and study from...  there are so many options of what to have on your map.  There are even Biblical maps, historical maps, world and U.S. maps too.

I saw this product a few months back and was drooling over it in a homeschool magazine, and vowed to buy it for this year's studies.  So imagine my delight when I was asked by Timberdoodle to review and own it for FREE!

This is a resource we will use for years to come and are so thankful to have the chance to review and own WonderMaps.

We love the fact that there are so many options when choosing the maps you need.  You can print a map for your kids to study with all of the borders, cities, capitals of a region... then print a blank map for the kids to label.  Genius!

Thank you Timberdoodle and Bright Ideas Press for such a fantastic product!

LEGO club!

Last weekend, my boys were able to host their first LEGO club!  They had been wanting to start meeting with their friends every few weeks that are fellow LEGO fanatics and the time finally came.  We had a fun time!! It was a 3 hour meeting and we enjoyed lunch together too.  This was a fantastic group of fun, polite kiddos that were so much fun to have over.

They each brought a LEGO creation they made to share with the group...

It was fun to see the results of their imaginations!

We also found some YouTube videos that the boys would like....  they were a hit!  Here's what we watched:

Enjoy!

The next LEGO club is much-awaited by our boys, and we're so thankful they have some good LEGO-loving buddies to share it with.  Until next time!

Still cruising along..

Maybe you're wondering how the food thing is going?  Well, I'm still here, after more than 3 months on the no-dairy, sugar, or gluten grains plan.  I feel amazingly better, and nearly all of the symptoms I was having that led to the Dr. ordered change in eating are gone.  It's amazing, really.

I feel better than I have in years.  Headaches are gone, no more tummy troubles, and the weight loss of 17 pounds is just icing on top of this cake.  (Sugar free, of course!)

But now that I've been doing this for 14 weeks, I've had brown rice noodles once (not bad!) and I've had a here and there bite of a cookie, etc...  And I did have pizza out with my family the other night.  (Divine!)  But not that addictive feeling I used to get.  I definitely need to keep up this way of eating... I DON'T want to go back to the way I felt.  But I feel good about an everyone in a while change in the plan.

The cool thing, is that I've found lots of great alternatives to the things I can't have.  I'm baking again once a week with coconut flour or this new gluten-free baking mix.  I found a muffin recipe that is divine and fills that void that no grains have left.  I'm still loving quinoa, hummus, meat, eggs, seeds, nuts, veggies, fruit (I have my banana/cocoa smoothie each day, but that's really it for fruit), almond milk, and herbal tea.

Another snack/meal that is getting me by these days is a half an avocado mashed up with salt and a small tomato and put on top of these crackers I found that are made from wheat-free/gluten-free ingredients and they are SUPER crunchy.  (Organic Mary's Gone Crackers - Original)  The crunch from whole baked seeds took some getting used to.  But anything bread-like and crunchy is a nice change!

So I'm still here, plugging away... and today I took measurements for the first time in 2 months!  Here are the standings and my inches lost since I started in July:

waist at belly button:  6 inches lost
largest part of belly:  4 inches lost
hips/rear end:  3 inches lost
thigh:  3/4 in. lost on each
arm:  1.5 in. lost on each

I'm really happy I took measurements at the start. (Even though I took them after I'd already lost 7 pounds, it still shows a huge change!)  I'm praising God that I have a nurse practitioner that he is using to bring me back to full health.  I really feel great.  Take me back a year ago or even worse 3 years ago and you'd find a very different woman.  And for that I'm TRULY, truly thankful.

blog blank

Hi friends...

Maybe you've noticed that there hasn't been a "deep" post for some time now from me.  Maybe you don't care, and that's fine too!  I have dozens of things I want to talk about here on the blog, but the time to sit and actually type them out escapes me.  I've been going to bed earlier, and have been waking up earlier too before the kids rise.  It has been something I've wanted to do for years, but it just "wasn't working" with my night owl ways.  I'm just loving it, and I just don't know why I resisted for so long!  Now, mind you, I'm talking about the 4 nights in a week when Jeremy has to go to work and we get up to do school in the mornings...  Jeremy and I can be quite the night owls on our 3 day weekends!

New England Church in Fall Painting - Laura Tasheiko

Also, I'm just not on the computer as much.  (Yay - this is also something I've worked to be disciplined about in my life.)  But another one of the reasons my fingers just haven't been click-clacking along is that I'm realizing that most of my ideas are about how others are doing things wrong and how they are focusing on the superficial and not the supernatural.  Yup, being really honest here.  I can be judgmental at times.  Even though sometimes I'm sadly proud enough to think I'm not.  I feel like my pet-peeves get the best of me sometimes and I figure maybe so and so, or so and so will stumble upon this meager blog and be touched to change.  Laughable, I know!  So I ask God to give me grace, grace, grace to handle annoyances and not view myself as the holy martyr all the time.  And he is.  So I choose to be silent.

And maybe there are things in my life that are on other people's Top 10 Pet-Peeve Lists.  Who knows?

Some changes are in the works for the this blog, and I'm toying around with the idea of posting on 2 specific days a week... like maybe every Monday and  Saturday?  And I've been wanting to talk more about what God is teaching me on a regular basis, because he has done an overhaul on this girl in the last year.  I'd like to talk more about that in the coming months.  The new blog address will be launched (Lord willing) in the next few weeks ~ and I've been busy contemplating and praying about what God wants for the next blog project! (That is already up and running and looking fab thanks to my talented friend!) I'll be sad to let go of Bacon TidBits - it has been a fun 5-year joyride spent stretching my wings a bit and doing what I love in the meantime.

So this bit of random post is to say that I'm still here and I will be back with a more clear direction in the coming weeks - so if you want to come with me, stay tuned!

Much love,  Amanda
